Pixel Art

Pixel art is one of those things that I have wanted to try, but never really got around to doing. Well, that is no longer the case, as I have successfully completed the 256 Points assignment from the DS106 assignment bank. This assignment was to create an illustrated icon of a complex object in a 16×16 pixel space. My original idea was to do an airplane but, upon execution, I found that I could make a pixel image of that quite easily. I wanted a challenge, so I decided to attempt to make a bicycle. This was much more to my liking. It was more difficult, but it was a lot more rewarding when I figured out how to incorporate certain details into the drawing. In the end I think I got most of the components in that I wanted except the bike chain, but I think that would have just cluttered the back half of the bike. I’m very pleased with the final product and I hope I’ll feel confident enough to work on some more sophisticated pixel art in the future.

    • Thank you, Elizabeth. Me too, but I’ll probably have to use something other than Procreate, since the brushes usually want to fill in some of the pixels surrounding the one I tap.

  1. I really like this. It’s so creative and it looks amazing! I did something similar with the “4 lines, 5 dots, 1 curve” assignment and enjoy the minimalist approach to art.
